Dietetics Program

This program is a five-year program and consists of two phases:

  • Two years of prerequisites. This is considered the pre-dietetics sequence.
  • Three years in the coordinated dietetics program.

During the first two years of the curriculum, students develop a foundation in science and general education.

The last three years, to which students need to be formally accepted, are devoted to professional courses and supervised practice (fieldwork). Accepted students will transition seamlessly to the graduate curriculum. No GRE is required for this professional program, and the graduate program is non-thesis.

About the Program

The Coordinated Program in Dietetics (CP) at the University of Missouri has a rich tradition. Established in 1972, it is the only coordinated program in Missouri and is among the oldest accredited coordinated programs in the United States.

The CP prepares students to become registered dietitian/nutritionists (RD/N). RDNs specialize in applied nutrition and work in a variety of practice settings, such as hospitals and clinics, schools, business and industry, private practice and public health clinics. Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the national Registration Examination for Dietitians (RD Exam). The five-year pass rate for first-time test takers is 97%.

During the first two years of the curriculum, students develop a foundation in science and general education. Following formal acceptance to the CP (see Admission to CP), students begin the three-year professional course of study, including one summer. These last three years are devoted to professional courses and supervised practice (fieldwork). The accepted CP students must remain in good academic standing with a minimum semester GPA of 3.0 and comply with professionalism requirements. CP students will transition seamlessly to the graduate curriculum. No GRE is required for this professional program. The graduate program is non-thesis.

The University of Missouri’s accredited Coordinated Program in Dietetics, housed in a world-class research institution, provides academic training to prepare students for successful careers as entry-level registered dietitian/registered dietitian nutritionists. The program strives to improve health of Missourians and beyond by offering high-quality educational experiences, culminating in a master’s degree, and including a concentration area in nutrition therapy.

Goal 1: The CP will prepare competent registered dietitian nutritionists or registered dietitians for careers in a variety of practice settings throughout Missouri and the nation.

  1. First time test-takers will achieve a five-year average pass rate on the RD exam of 80% or better.
  2. Over a five-year period, 80% or more of students enrolled in the CP will complete the program within 4.5 years (150%) of the time planned for completion.
  3. Over a five-year period, 70% of the CP alumni respondents who sought employment in dietetics or related fields will be employed in dietetics or related fields within 12 months.
  4. Over a five-year period, 80% of NS 8975 preceptor respondents will rank the quality of students from MU as above average.
  5. Over a five-year period, alumni respondents working in dietetics or related fields will collectively identify 3 different practice areas as primary job settings.
  6. Over a five-year period, 50% of alumni respondents will be working in dietetics or related fields in Missouri or adjoining states.

Goal 2: CP graduates will recognize the importance of professional development.

  1. Over a five-year period, 50% of alumni respondents will report being a member of a professional organization.
  2. Over a five-year period, 50% of alumni respondents will report having sought information about obtaining a specialty certification.
  3. Over a five-year period, 50% of alumni respondents practicing in dietetic or related field will regularly (at least monthly) seek out current research findings for application in their practice.

Reaccredited in 2014, the program is accredited through June 2024.

Requirements

Supervised practice sites require that students complete immunizations, drug screen and other health requirements prior to placement in that facility. The MU Student Health Center on campus can assist students in this process. The requirements change frequently, and students may be asked to update their health records multiple times while in the program.

The Student Health Center does not cover services performed outside the Student Health Center. In addition, some supervised practice sites require proof of health insurance as a requirement for student placement. Therefore, students are encouraged to be covered under a health insurance plan.

An Accident and Sickness Insurance plan is available to purchase through the Cashier's office.

Supervised practice sites also require that the student pass mandatory drug screens, criminal background checks and additional qualification checks prior to placement in their facility.

Failure to pass these requirements may result in fn students losing their spot in the program. Once started in the coordinated dietetics program, all students will be required to repeat these requirements.

Students are responsible for the costs of drug screens, criminal background checks and other qualification checks.

Equivalent transfer credits are accepted. Some courses may require department review and this review requires syllabus from the semester you took the course.

To be eligible for consideration, the applicant must:

  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.2
  • have completed or be able to complete prior to starting the CP the first four semesters of courses listed under Course Requirements for Dietetics
  • be enrolled in or already have completed NEP 2340 and BIOCHM 3630 at the time the application is submitted. Students must achieve a final course grade of B- or better in both NEP 2340 and BIOCHM 3630, or equivalent transfer course approved by faculty. Failure to meet these criteria may result in forfeiture of a space in the CP.

Applications to the CP are accepted once a year. Application deadline will be posted on this website.

The application process involves, at a minimum:

  • submission of a dietetics application
  • original transcripts from each institution attended
  • personal statement
  • References
  • documentation of job shadowing and grocery store assignment

Selected students will be invited to a personal interview, which is done in person and on campus. A brief writing activity follows the interview.

Admission to the University of Missouri does not guarantee admission to the CP.

Tuition and fees for the CP courses are the same as for regular University courses. Those rates are listed at http://cashiers.missouri.edu.

Students are responsible for obtaining their own funding for their education. The rate for graduate credit hours (mainly year five on the Course Requirements for Dietetics) is higher than for undergraduate credit hours.

Additional program expenses include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics student membership
  • lab coats
  • name badge
  • transportation to and from supervised practice sites
  • meals while in supervised practice
  • housing while in supervised practice (if out of town)
  • health screenings and immunizations
  • drug screen and criminal background checks

Participation in professional meeting is strongly encouraged. Registration, transportation, lodging and meals for attendance at local, state and national meetings are the responsibility of the student. Optional expenses for graduation (senior class picture, program pin, dietetics student ceremony) are covered by the student.

The cost of texts, course packets, related website material, supplemental reading materials, computer and related-computer supplies is the responsibility of the student. These costs vary by semester. It is noted that most courses require access to computer tools such as Blackboard and Tegrity. The purchase of RD Exam study materials is the responsibility of the student.
