Research focus:
The focus of my lab is nutrition and the physiology of metabolic disease with an emphasis on obesity and diabetes. Obesity is an independent risk factor for a number of chronic diseases. My research program aims to understand the mechanisms behind this association and to investigate potential nutritional and pharmacological therapies. Adipose tissue expansion is an inflammatory event. One objective of my lab is to further characterize the inflammatory nature of obese adipose tissue and the impact this has on other organs as well as overall metabolic status. My lab is also interested in identifying and exploiting bioactive compounds in food products with the goal of developing nutritional approaches to regulating the metabolic dysfunction associated with obesity. Ultimately, we hope to help advance the scientific community's understanding of obesity and its associated comorbidities.
